Corelli's Mandolin: A Novel - Louis de Bernières I don't really know what possessed me to buy this book (quite a few years ago), as it's not the sort of thing I normally read. But it was one of the most extraordinary things I ever read. It got me completely hooked on historical (if you can call the 2nd world war historial) books.

It has one of the most wonderful characters in Carlo, the thought of whom still brings tears to my eyes. A man who showed such pure love and compassion for another person. A love which was recognised by other villagers. It was wonderfully written.
