For a YA book this dealt with some fairly deep themes, self harming, death - the cruelty of high school.
It also contains 2 rather sweet love stories Lissa and Christian and Rose and Dimitri - Dimitri is hot, I'll get that out of the way straight away and although she's only 17, I finished this book really hoping that Rose gets him in the end (even if he is 24 and her mentor).
This story puts yet another spin on the vampire genre (you have strigoi - immortal vampires, moroi - mortal vampires and dhampires who guard the moroi, I still haven't got a clue what they really are).
Lissa is the last of her royal family and Rose is her best friend and guardian in training. They share a bond, where Rose can feel Lissa's emotions. It's an interesting idea and I can't wait to read the second in the series.
It's good - not as good as Twilight (but then very little is), but it's very good.
