Weird, very weird. My first Douglas Coupland.
Karen and her small group of friends - still missing their friend Jared who died of leukemia. Karen is frightened of her dreams, a feeling that she has seen something that she shouldn't have. After losing her virginity to her boyfriend Richard (on the top of a mountain), Karen falls into a coma. While she sleeps her friends grow up - or at least they try to. Richard regularly visits his girlfriend in the hospital, he becomes a father (as Karen became pregnant from their one time together), or as least tries to.
Everyone feels the absence of Karen, her parents, her friends, her daughter. Her friends get into drink, drugs, they find their way into TV location scouting, special effects.
Then 17 years later Karen wakes up and things really start to get weird. She finds it hard to adjust to the fact that she's lost 17 years, that her body has withered, her hair is grey, she can't walk. And she's a mother, one day she was a teenager and the next she has a teenage daughter. But even weirder Karen has seen the future, a future where everyone dies, she even knows when it will happen, 2 days after Christmas.
And 2 days after Christmas people lie down, go to sleep and die.... everyone except Karen, her daughter and her friends. They spend a year on their own, while the world breaks down, there's earthquakes, volcanos, acid rain, radioactivity and all they do is loot. Megan (Karen and Richards daughter), gives birth to a daughter of her own. One year later Jared visits them and asks then a very pertinent question - what have you learned from the last year and if you had a chance would you do what was neccessary to put the world back to the way it was?
