The Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkien I wanted to like it, I really did. I know it's a classic and everyone loves it, but for me it was just OK.

Maybe if I'd read it when I was younger I would have appreciated it more. As it was it read like a very young YA book - which isn't a bad thing.

Maybe if I'd read it before getting 2 thirds of the way through the Lord of Rings (I've come to a complete stop at The Return of the King and I think it's because I LOVED the movies and they removed a lot of what annoyed me about the books).

Maybe if I hadn't read books like The Dragonbone Chair (a series that I still can't bring myself to finish because I love it sooo much, even though I started reading it over 20 years ago) then I wouldn't have such high expectations from a book like this.

It is a very unassuming story, of how Bilbo Baggins of Bag End finds himself on a adventure with Gandalf and a band of Dwarves who travel to the Lonely Mountain to reclaim a horde of treasure from a Dragon.

I had two main issues with this book.

1) Any book that includes f**king great spiders is going to be problem for me - I had to keep substituting the word for something else as I was reading and kept checking the corners of the room of anything that could be running around. Yes, I have issues - I know!!!

2) All the f**king singing. Which was one of my problems with the Lord of the Rings.

Other than that it's harmless enough, I'm excited to see what Peter Jackson does with it though (if I can sit through all the f**king great spiders that is).
