Knots & Crosses - Ian Rankin Such a quick clever read.

The first Inspector Rebus novel, in which Rebus is a Detective Sergeant. He's a hard drinking, hard working smoker with a failed marriage and a young daughter. A man who spent time in the Army, in the SAS and suffered a nervous breakdown after leaving - then he joined the police.

Not necessarily liked by many people - distant from his brother (who's a stage hypnotist - followed in their fathers footsteps). Haunted by a terrible memory that he can't remember.

A very dark man - but one that wants do a good job, especially when someone is murdering young girls. A killer who starts to send messages to Rebus, along with pieces of twine and matchstick crosses.

Why is the killer conversing with Rebus - what does he want from him?

This was a little bit wordy - but then it is a very early work and you can see that the author's still finding his feet. The introduction was very interesting as it indicated that Rebus was supposed to die at the end of the novel originally - thankfully he decided against that in the end! Looking forward to reading the next one.
